Türkçe kullanımıyla müzik kelimesi esasen antik Yunanca kökenlidir, ilk kullanımı musike şeklindedir. Latinceye musica olarak geçen kelime, latin kökenli neredeyse bütün dillerde benzer şekilde kullanılmaktadır (İng. music, Alm Muzik, Fr. musique gibi).
