*Brief on Ancient Ireland Monarchy System
Ancient Ireland operated as a collection of small, rival kingdoms rather than a single unified monarchy until the Norman invasion introduced a more centralized system of English rule. A titular "High King" existed, but his authority was symbolic and dependent on the allegiance of the numerous regional kings, who often engaged in conflict. This fragmented political landscape, characterized by powerful regional dynasties and constant power struggles, persisted until the Norman conquest in the late 12th century.
