History of Radio is controversial and dates back to the 1890s. Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi is often credited with inventing the Radio after receiving the first wireless telegraphy patent in England in 1896. However, Nikola Tesla demonstrated wireless Radio communication in St. Louis, Missouri in 1893, and was granted basic Radio patents in the United States in 1900. Marconi's first successful Radio transmission was across the Atlantic Ocean on December 12, 1901, which is considered the invention date of the Radio. The first voice and music signals heard over radio waves were transmitted in December 1906 from Brant Rock, Massachusetts (just south of Boston), when Canadian experimenter Reginald Fessenden produced about an hour of talk and music for technical observers and any rad

Radio broadcasting in Sri Lanka dates to 1923. Radio broadcasting, like other forms of media in Sri Lanka, is generally divided along linguistic lines with state and private media operators providing services in Sinhala, Tamil, and English language. The first radio broadcast in Ceylon was in 1923 when recorded music was broadcast using parts of radio equipment from a captured German submarine.[1] Regular broadcasting started in Colombo in July 1924.[1] Ceylon's first radio station Radio Colombo started regular broadcasting on 16 December 1925.[2][3] The station was taken over by the British military during World War II who renamed the station Radio SEAC which broadcast across South Asia from October 1944. After the war the station was handed back to the civilian government of Ceylon.
